Overview
FlashVoice enables system-wide voice dictation on macOS and Windows.
You speak, and FlashVoice inserts text directly at your cursor position.
This guide explains how to use desktop dictation effectively.
Step 1: Focus a Text Field
FlashVoice types text wherever your cursor is active.
Make sure a text field is focused in any app, such as:
- Slack
- Google Docs
- Notion
- Microsoft Word
- Email clients
- Code editors (VS Code, JetBrains IDEs)
If you see a blinking cursor, FlashVoice can dictate there.
Step 2: Start Dictation with a Hotkey
FlashVoice supports both push-to-talk and hands-free dictation.
Default Hotkeys
macOS
- Push-to-talk:
Fn - Hands-free mode:
Right Command
Windows
- Push-to-talk:
Page Up - Hands-free mode:
Page Down
Once dictation starts, speak naturally at your own pace.
Step 3: End Dictation and Insert Text
- Push-to-talk: release the key
- Hands-free mode: press the hands-free key again
FlashVoice will stop recording, transcribe your speech, and insert formatted text into the focused app.
Troubleshooting: Microphone Not Working
If no text appears, check the following.
Check System Permissions
macOS
- System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone
- Allow FlashVoice
Windows
- Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone
- Enable microphone access for desktop apps
Verify Input Volume
- Ensure the microphone is not muted
- Confirm input volume is not too low
For best results, use a built-in or wired microphone instead of Bluetooth.
